New extended car warranty company Fair partners with online car retailers and financial institutions to provide affordable plans with quick claims service.

Key Points:

  • Fair is a direct warranty provider so you don’t have to deal with third-party administrators
  • Fair plans include extras like roadside assistance and discounts at 7,000+ repair shops
  • Our sample quote shows Fair’s plans are affordable compared to other companies we’ve researched

Extended warranties bring to mind robocalls and denied claims. But some companies are working to change that. Fair is a newcomer to the industry and strives to offer quick claims service and affordable pricing. The young company began in 2024 and does some things differently than traditional warranty providers on the market.

To provide an overview of Fair, we dove into the company’s sample contracts and went through the shopping process with one of its partners. We also talked to Will Betteridge, CEO, and Noah Walker, Sr. Product Manager, to get a better understanding of the company. Read on to learn more about Fair to decide if it’s right for you.

How Fair Warranty Works

Fair sells vehicle service contracts through partners like online car retailers and marketplaces in all states except California, Florida, and Massachusetts. You can come across the company when shopping for a vehicle online or working with a bank or credit union to finance a car. Fair’s online integration tools make it easy for its partners to explain coverage so drivers can pick the best plan.

Talking about how Fair works, Will said:

“Most of our customers discover and purchase Fair warranties through our amazing network of partners—think marketplaces, online vehicle retailers, and affinity groups that bring our products straight to their members.”

Unlike many competitors in the industry, Fair is a direct warranty provider. This means you contact Fair directly to file a claim. Many other companies just market and sell plans that are administered by third parties. Direct warranty providers typically offer faster claims processing and customer service.

Our Top Pick

After reviewing 20 companies, we’ve determined that Endurance is our preferred option for extended car warranties.

  • Unlimited Miles for Cars Under 20 Years
  • Maintenance Coverage Available
  • Salvage or Rebuilt Cars Are Covered
  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance
  • Direct Administrator of Claims

Fair Warranty Coverage

Fair Warranty offers a few different plans that range from basic coverage for the powertrain (engine, transmission, and drive axle) to comprehensive coverage like a factory warranty. Vehicles up to 10 years old with up to 150,000 miles are eligible, and the mileage can extend past 150,000 once you have a plan.

Here’s what Noah said about the maximum mileage limit:

“If a customer has 149,000 miles on their odometer at the time of purchase, we still have a range of coverage options reaching beyond that 150,000-mile sign-up boundary. The maximum bounds of our coverage offering reaches up to around 190,000 miles at the time the coverage expires.”

Comparing Fair Warranty Plans

Fair offers New Owner and Existing Owner plans depending on when you bought the vehicle, but coverage is fairly similar. Below are details for the New Owner plans, which would apply if you are currently purchasing a vehicle or bought the car in the last two weeks.

Existing Owner plans are Premium (which is like New Owner Platinum), Standard (which is like New Owner Gold), and Powertrain (like New Owner Powertrain). Premium or Platinum are the highest levels and cover all mechanical breakdowns except for a list of exclusions. This type of coverage is similar to a factory warranty in scope.

Fair covers EVs under New Owner plans but not Existing Owner plans.

Fair Warranty Benefits

Fair’s extended warranty plans come with 24/7 roadside assistance. This includes towing, spare tire installation, lockout service, battery service, fuel delivery, and winching service.

Plans also come with trip interruption, which reimburses you for food and lodging up to a limit if you have an overnight repair over 150 miles from home.

Finally, if you have a covered repair requiring more than four hours of labor, you can get reimbursed for a rental car or rideshare services up to a limit.

What Does Fair Exclude From Coverage?

Fair’s extended warranties come with exclusions that are common in the industry. Here are a few examples:

  • Damage from accidents, lack of maintenance, misuse, or the environment
  • Cosmetic parts like glass, trim, upholstery, finishes, and chrome
  • Parts expected to wear out like brake pads and wiper blades
  • Regular maintenance services like oil changes and tire rotations
  • Unauthorized repairs
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Cost of diagnosis if the repair isn’t covered

Other Terms and Conditions To Know

Here are a few more points to be aware of:

  • Waiting period: 30 days and 1,000 miles
  • Money-back guarantee: 60 days (better than the industry standard of 30)
  • Deductible options: $100 is the default, $250 and $500 options available on request
  • Transfers: You can transfer a Fair plan to a secondary owner if you sell your car.
  • Refund: Cancel within 60 days for a full refund. You’ll get a pro-rated refund based on time and claims paid after that.

Fair Warranty Customer Service

As a newer company, Fair doesn’t have hundreds of reviews quite yet. But the reviews it does have paint a positive picture of the company. Fair has a 5.0-star rating on Google from 16 reviews and a 4.4-star rating on Trustpilot from 17 reviews.

According to Fair’s help center, the company processes most claims within 12 hours. It also pays the repair shop directly whenever possible, so you just pay your deductible on covered repairs.

Where Can You Go for Covered Repairs?

Fair can cover repairs from any licensed mechanic in all 50 states. That said, you’ll get the best service with Fair’s network of over 7,000 preferred shops through OpenBay. These shops offer a 25% discount on out-of-pocket costs (excluding the deductible).

So if your warranty only covers part of a repair, you get a discount on the portion you have to pay for. You can still get the discount even if the warranty doesn’t cover the breakdown at all. Fair customers also get discounted rates for maintenance services like oil changes at preferred shops.

How Much Does a Fair Warranty Cost?

Fair warranty quotes are customized for your situation. This means the price depends on your car’s year, make, model, and odometer reading. Prices also vary depending on the level and length of coverage. Fair offers a $100 deductible by default, though you can get a $250 or $500 deductible on request. Choosing a higher deductible can lower the overall cost of the plan.

In general, extended warranties for Japanese models tend to be the most affordable, which are followed by warranties for American and European models. But there are always exceptions.

Fair Warranty Sample Quote

We got a sample Fair warranty quote through one of its partners CarEdge. Here are the details:

  • Vehicle: 2023 Toyota RAV4 with up to 50,000 miles
  • Plan: Premium
  • Term: 7 additional years or 140,000 additional miles
  • Cost: $2,918
  • Payment options: Pay in full or in four monthly installments of $730

Going from this sample, it looks like Fair warranties are affordable compared to other quotes for companies we’ve reviewed. Fair’s plan covers seven years for $2,918, which works out to be around $419 per year of coverage. That’s a good price especially considering the Premium plan covers all major systems. This price is also more affordable than some factory extended warranties we’ve come across.

Again, pricing depends on many factors, so you may find different rates if you get a quote from Fair.

Bottom Line: Is a Fair Warranty Worth It?

Considering Fair offers comprehensive coverage at a good price, we think getting a Fair warranty is worth it. Just be sure to calculate the price per year of coverage when you get a quote, and look over the fine print to know what is and isn’t covered.

How We Rank Extended Warranty Providers

We take a methodical approach to rating warranty companies. Here’s what that includes:

  • Coverage: We consider things like the number of plans, mileage limit, maintenance coverage options, and added benefits to score companies in this area.
  • Cost and buying experience: We get quotes from providers and pay attention to the experience with customer service. We also consider a company’s transparency during the buying process through sample contracts and clear coverage descriptions.
  • Reputation: This category includes a company’s longevity plus its rating on the BBB and whether or not it has BBB accreditation.
  • Customer service: To rate customer service, we look at BBB customer ratings plus Trustpilot scores. We also note whether the company is a direct warranty provider.
